COSTA RICA

Apostille information in Costa Rica

Designated competent authority(ies) to issue an apostille in Costa Rica:

Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto de Costa Rica, Departamento de Autenticaciones

Price: ¢ 625.00 (= € 1)

Apostille Service and Legalizations Signature Authentication Service The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica authenticates the signatures of national authorities to take effect in foreign countries.

The procedure consists in authenticating the signatures of the authorized public servants, to certify the validity and legitimacy of the documents of national origin abroad. The user must request the national authority that issues the document all the necessary information so that the document can be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A Costa Rican public document that has not been authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, will not have any effect abroad.

Likewise, a public document issued in another State will not have any effect in Costa Rica unless it has been duly legalized by a unit of the MREC, or has been apostilled in the State that issues it.

It is important to note that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs DOES NOT legalize the content of the document, ONLY legalizes the signature of the official who certifies the document in question.

What documents can be apostilled?

All public documents, issued in Costa Rica that will have legal effect in another State or Government, except documents executed by diplomatic or consular agents.

Apostille Service and Legalization Service The MREC has two alternative means of authenticating the signatures of a document at the public’s disposal, so that it can take effect abroad. This will depend on whether the country of destination of the document to be legalized is or is not part of the Apostille Agreement.

1. If the document is addressed to countries that are not members of the Hague Convention, the interested will obtain the traditional legalization that will be placed on the physical document.

PROCESS OF APOSTILLE A DOCUMENT IN COSTA RICA:

2. If the document is addressed to a member country of the Hague Convention, the interested party will obtain the Apostille that will also be attached to the physical document.

The duly granted apostille will be digitized and published so that it can be consulted and downloaded on our website, through the “Apostille Consultation” service, using the keys printed on the document.

The purpose of this service of consultation of apostilles and legalizations is that, the authentication applicant and any other interested third party to whom the authenticated document is destined, can through this page, verify the validity of an Apostille or Legalization.

When the person interested in verifying an authentication, enter the elements that unify the authentication (Apostille Key / Legalization Code, Granting Date and Verification Code), the digital image of the Apostille / Legalization, the which will be a true copy of the original issued by the Competent Authority. This image will allow a visual comparison with the presented Apostille, being able to confirm that it is genuine. When a procedure is carried out before the Authentication Department, the user is given a receipt (proof of signature of documents), where the date and time of the delivery is clearly indicated, in order to present it to the time to withdraw according to the indicated terms.

Authentication (Legalization) of Documents

Foreign countries often require “official” documents to be “authenticated” before such documents can be accepted. An “authentication” is a governmental act by which a designated public official certifies to the genuineness of the signature and seal and the position of the official who has executed, issued, or certified a copy of a document. As long as this document is authenticated by an apostille it is internationally accepted and valid in countries which are Party to the Convention de La Haye du 5 October 1961.

The sole function of the apostille is to certify the authenticity of the signature on the document in question by identifying any stamp or seal affixed to the document. The apostille either must be attached as an annex to the official document or placed on the document itself by means of a stamp. (A copy of the form is attached).

At the Ministry this process may take two (2) working days once the documents meet the necessary requirements. Please note that the document(s) must be hand-delivered to the Ministry where an officer will ensure that they meet the necessary requirements for processing. The cost of the Apostille is $55.00 ECD in STAMPS (which may be obtained from the General Post Office, Bay Road).
